Background: Touhou Wiki ArticlePersonality: The first words used to describe Mystia are often "arrogant". Or at lease egocentric. And they're not far off, to be honest. Much of her early canon dialog in Imperishable Night suggests a high opinion of herself and her singing. She even refers to herself as something of a Queen of the Night. Most of that, however, was her natural self-confidence being magnified by the Full Moon to an obnoxious degree, as it was toned down in her other canon appearances. Still, she is only one of two bosses in the history of the game to go into a second round fight with the heroes immediately rather than resting after mid-stage. That speaks a lot to her opinion of herself and her abilities.
Mystia is also energetic. Nothing seems to get her down, physically, and she has a very "go get'em" attitude that helps her in her daily life. It works into her songs as well, which are often described as energetic and noisy (and therefore popular with young people). She rushes into situations, often without thinking. And even when she loses, she doesn't seem too bad off, still dusting herself off and getting back up every time. It's no wonder the fandom likes to associate her with Cirno.
She is, unfortunately, quite dumb. Very very dumb. While her intelligence may be a bit higher than Cirno's (she can run a business, after all), Mystia has trouble absorbing information and displays difficulty reading throughout canon. Her brain lies in a good business sense, able to run her eel cart very well (even though it's something of a scam). Practical knowledge comes a bit more naturally to her. But deeper things, like the nature of Shiki Eiki's lecture to her at the end of Phantasmagoria of Flower View, take a lot of time to sink in (if at all).
However, Mystia has shown something remarkable amongst Touhou characters. Over her time in canon, from her first appearance in Imperishable Night to her most recent appearance in Oriental Sacred Place, Mystia has actually
matured over time. She has become remarkably less of an egocentric brat and more of a self-aware person who understands that even if she can do nothing but sing, her songs can have the power to help people. While Shiki Eiki's lecture never fully absorbed, she shows signs in later canon that she is, in fact, learning to become a better person.
And, really, with the fact that Marisa and Reimu willingly sought out Mystia's company on Oriental Sacred Place, says that underneath all of that anti-human attitude, Mystia actually can be a sweet little bird. One just has to get to know her, first. Her song (and her cooking and beer), after all, brought joy to the heroes and the Three Fairies in the manga, after it had been used as a weapon in Imperishable Night. Generally, it suggests that Mystia really is a nice girl once you get to know her, and a good ally to have when in a pinch.
Abilities: Mystia is a yousuzume, which gives her powerful "song" abilities. Her basic songs can cause confusion and night blindness, but Shiki Eiki implies in their meeting that her power can cause even more chaos if left unchecked. By Shiki Eiki's reckoning, Mystia's ability is one of the more formidable powers in canon.
